Social ProgrammeAn exciting and varied social programme will be planned for the EACPT Congress. The Welcome Reception - Edinburgh Castle, Monday 13th July 2009 The Welcome Reception will be held at Edinburgh Castle. Over one thousand years of history sits on top of the famous Edinburgh Rock where the Castle dominates the city. Edinburgh Castle is home to Scotland's Crown Jewels, 'The Honours of Scotland' which are the oldest regalia in the British Isles. They comprise a crown, a sword and a sceptre, all of which date from the 15th & 16th Century. Edinburgh Castle is also home to the Stone of Destiny, revered as a holy relic and fought over by the Scottish and English for 700 years. If you wish to attend the Welcome Reception then please register early as places are limited. The Welcome Reception is free to all deleegates and registered accompanying guests. The Congress Dinner - Dynamic Earth, Tuesday 14th July 2009 The Congress Dinner will be held at Dynamic Earth - a contemporary visitor attraction at the bottom of the Royal Mile. The venue offers stunning views of Salisbury Crags, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament. The pre-dinner drinks reception will be held in the Earthscapes Galleries that include a tropical rain forest, polar landscapes, an oceans gallery and the prehistoric casualities and survivors' gallery. Dinner will take place in the Statosphere and will be followed by traditional Scottish entertainment. Congress ToursEdinburgh City - Sunday 12th July, 1300 - 1700 hours From the comfort of the touring coach discover the history and beauty of Edinburgh. The tour takes in the Georgian New Town, with its sweeping crescents and terraces, the historic Royal Mile with its enchanting wynds and closes and culminates with a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Royal Yacht Britannia is a magnificent ship which has served the Royal family for over 40 years and has played host to some of the most famous people in the world. Wander around at leisure and take in the wonderful history and life of this amazing ship. Cost per ticket £41.00 Malt Whisky - the water of life - Monday 13th July, 1300 - 1700 hours Departing from the EICC, the tour heads southwards to the pretty village of Pencaitland where the Glenkinchie Malt Whisky distillery is situated. After a tour of the distillery participants can have a “wee dram” to sample the finished product, before visiting the specialist whisky shop. Scone Palace and the City of Perth - Monday 13th July, 0930 - 1700 hours Departing from the EICC, this tour will travel north across the Forth Road Bridge and on through the Kingdom of Fife. On the outskirts of Perth lies Scone Palace, home to the Earls of Mansfield and the ancient coronation site of Scottish Kings. After a tour of the Palace and its beautiful grounds the tour continues into Perth for lunch. There will be free time for shopping and independent sightseeing before returning by way of the pleasant market town of Crieff, Gleneagles and Glendevon to Edinburgh. St Andrews - Home of Golf - Tuesday 14th July, 0930-1730 hours Discover the home of golf and much more besides. After leaving Edinburgh the tour crosses the River Forth and enters the Kingdom of Fife. There is a stop in the picturesque fishing village of Anstruther before continuing on to St Andrews. On arrival in St Andrews there will be an orientation tour of the town. After lunch there will be plenty of free time to explore the grounds of the ancient university, the castle or cathedral or visit the Old Course and the British Golf Museum, or simply shop. Rosslyn Chapel - Wednesday 15th July, 0930 -1330 hours The unique and amazing Rosslyn Chapel, as featured in Dan Brown’s bestseller The DaVinci Code, is famed worldwide for the beauty of its carvings and the aura of mystery and magic that surrounds it. This 15th Century Chapel was founded by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness of the Sinclair family, a noble family descended from Norman knights. It features the standard designs of medieval architecture and is totally captivating. |
